I finally got to hear Fitzcarraldo! Oh man! I mentioned it yesterday night, and again before the show started I told Jo that I've seen Glen quite a few times and I couldn't believe I hadn't heard Fitz live yet.
Then lo and behold, he played it! Along with Red Chord and People All Get Ready*
We got a FANTASTIC set list. Pretty much my dream set list. Short of them throwing in a Mic Christopher cover (which I thought would happen at one point when Glen brought him up - he said that they had spent the day at Saint Michael's Hospital (a pretty well known hospital in Toronto) and that his two favorite saints were Saint Michael and Saint Christopher, so it was serendipitous for his best friend to be named Mic Christopher), it was perfect.
I'm totally going to massacre the set list order here, but we got (in no particular order):
They did the set, left for the encore, came back as expected... but at the end when they were supposed to stop, after they'd put down their instruments, Marketa walked over to Glen and I'm pretty sure that she asked him to do another song so they picked up their instruments one last time and went into People All Get Ready.
There were plenty of stories and banter thrown in - we got the Dee for Dog story; the stuff about the Saints; Glen talking about how he's realized that when you've come to a metaphorical wall and you can't get through it, it helps to walk away from the wall and you'll find that you've walked all the way around the world and are on the other side of it; Glen mentioned that Red Chord was played on an American Christian radio station; and plenty of intro's to songs - especially the new ones (I wasn't expecting that we'd get five new ones!)
They seemed to be in a fantastic mood all night, and I lost count of how many times they humbly and graciously thanked the crowd for coming out and being great. They played a pretty historic venue in Toronto - anyone who's anyone in that higher class of artists that separates legends from one hit wonders... well, they all pass through Massey Hall. It was built in the late 1800's and has seen everyone from Neil Young to Pavarotti to Oscar Peterson to Bob Marley to Bob Dylan to The Arcade Fire to U2 to David Gilmour to Barenaked Ladies to Alanis Morissette to Van Morrison to Our Lady Peace to Rufus Wainright to The Smashing Pumpkins to The Tragically Hip to James Brown to Aerosmith to Ryan Adams to Damien Rice have played gigs there. And it's hosted Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama, Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Russell Peters, Craig Ferguson, etc. etc. etc.
It's an iconic venue and Glen and company were definitely aware of this and seemed really pleased to be able to play here.
If this show is up on playedlastnight.com, I would strongly encourage everyone to get a copy. I can't imagine them being able to top this for the rest of their tour.
Waited around for them afterwards, but apparently they had family and friends in town so it took a while for Glen to come out and we left before anyone else came. But it was nice to be able to say thanks for the great gig.
Go With Happiness
Back Broke
I Have Loved You Wrong
^ Please ignore my singing at the end. I knew I was taping, but I couldn't not be a part of that moment!
If you've made it this far, congrats! Now, just to keep it all in one post... some pictures:

A few more are up on flickr
*The difference between seeing Glen in Toronto vs. seeing him in Dublin was made clear during this song. This was the song they played on New Years Eve - it was the last song of 2007, and they had attempted to time it so that at the end of the song we'd go straight into the countdown. BUT they finished early and we had at least 2 minutes to kill and then... the audience took over. We have all the time in the world, to get it right, to get it right. We have all the love in the world, to set it right, to set it right. We started singing those lines over and over, in perfect unison and it was a transcendental moment to be a part of. Tonight, while the audience did their best (given that most were hearing that song for the first time)... it just wasn't the same. Still great, but not... magical. The rest of the night however, was. So don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not complaining. But for a big fan of the band... this is why it's worth it to go to see a gig in their home country.

I'm totally going to massacre the set list order here, but we got (in no particular order):
- Red Chord
- Into The Mystic
- Fizcarraldo
- People All Get Ready (last song of the night)
- Falling Slowly
- What Happens When The Heart Just Stops
- The Moon
- Say It To Me Now (Glen solo acoustic, no mic, right up at the front the stage)
- Finally
- Leave
- Lies
- The Hill
- If You Want Me
- Blue Shoes (Colm solo)
- Go with Happiness
- Back Broke
- Low Rising (!! totally didn't expect this)
- I Have Loved You Wrong
- Another new song with the lyrics "I want to sit you down and talk, pull back the veils and find out what it is I've done wrong. I want to tear these curtains down, I want you to met me somewhere tonight..." (that's all I could get on video before security came along)
